Thumbnail tester

YouTube thumbnail tester: A against B in a mock feed

Add version A, version B and a title. See both inside a mock phone home feed, search results and the suggested sidebar, side by side, and judge which one reads better.

Same title on both, so the only difference is the thumbnail.

How it works

Two versions, one feed, your call

This is a side-by-side, not a scoreboard. You look at both the way a viewer would, scrolling past with half a second to spare.

  • +Drop in thumbnail A and thumbnail B
  • +Add the title they'd both run under
  • +See each one in a phone home feed, a search row and the sidebar
  • +Swap, tweak, and look again until one clearly reads better

What it is and isn't

Nothing uploaded. Nothing scored.

The tester runs in your browser. Your images never leave your device. It doesn't rate either version and it doesn't predict which one wins. You are the judge, and you get a fair view to judge from.

  • +No upload, no account, no stored images
  • +No score, no winner announced
  • +No click or view prediction of any kind

What to look for

Judge at phone size first

Most people see your thumbnail small, on a phone, next to a dozen others. Whichever version you can still read at that size is usually the stronger draft.

  • +Can you read the text without leaning in?
  • +Is there one clear subject, or two things fighting?
  • +Does it stand out from the thumbnails around it?
  • +Does the image add to the title, or just repeat it?

Real testing

Live results come from YouTube

A mock feed helps you choose between drafts. It can't tell you how real viewers behave. Once the video is published, use YouTube's own Test & Compare in YouTube Studio, which splits real impressions between versions.

  • +Use this page to pick which drafts deserve a real test
  • +Use Test & Compare in YouTube Studio for live results after you publish
  • +Read our YouTube A/B testing page for how to run a clean test

"I used to spend 1 hour on thumbnails. Now with LaunchLens it takes 10 minutes. I love it. I recommend it for small creators just starting out."

Questions, answered straight.

How do I test two YouTube thumbnails?+

Add both versions and a title above, then compare them side by side in the mock feed, search row and sidebar. After publishing, run YouTube Studio's Test & Compare for live results.

Does this tell me which thumbnail will get more clicks?+

No. It doesn't score or predict anything. It shows both versions the way viewers see them so you can judge readability and contrast for yourself.

Are my thumbnails uploaded?+

No. Everything runs in your browser and your images stay on your device.

What is YouTube's Test & Compare?+

It's a feature in YouTube Studio that tests different thumbnails on a video and shows how each performed with real viewers. It's the right tool for live results once a video is published.

What sizes does the mock feed use?+

Three: the phone home feed, a search results row and the suggested sidebar on desktop, so you see it large, medium and small.

Can I rate a thumbnail on a video that's already live?+

Yes, with the thumbnail checker, which works from a video link. Use this tester when you have two versions of your own to compare.
