LaunchLens vs Thumbmagic: fast vs finished.
We make LaunchLens, so read with that in mind. We signed up for Thumbmagic in June 2026, used its free credits, and found its hidden pricing. Credit where due, and receipts where not.
The short version
Thumbmagic (from the Submagic team) is the speed play: paste a video URL, pick a template, get a watermarked thumbnail in about a minute. Its free tier is real (3 thumbnails, no card) and its paid floor is the cheapest of the rivals we tested ($17/mo billed yearly). The trade-offs: pricing is not published anywhere on its site (it only appears in-app after signup, and month-to-month runs about $29-99), and the flow is template plus avatar with little control. LaunchLens starts at $9/mo with public pricing, puts your real face in the scene, reshoots thumbnails you already have, and packages the whole upload: cuts, Shorts and metadata included.

Where Thumbmagic genuinely wins
- Speed: URL to finished thumbnail in around a minute in our test
- The free tier is exactly what it claims: 3 real generations, watermark, transparent upsell
- Cheapest annual paid floor among the AI thumbnail rivals we tested ($17/mo billed yearly)
- Transcript-aware copy: our test pulled accurate text from the video itself
Where LaunchLens wins
- Public pricing you can see before creating an account
- $9 entry beats their real month-to-month cost (~$29)
- Your actual face in the scene with expression control, not an avatar
- Reshoot iterates on the thumbnail you already published
- One studio packages the whole upload: cuts, Shorts, thumbnail, metadata
Credit where due
Their free tier is honest. We verified it.
We tested four AI thumbnail tools in June 2026 and Thumbmagic was one of only two with a genuinely honest free tier. Three credits, no card, real generations with a watermark and a clear remove-watermark upsell. Our Minecraft test produced a usable thumbnail in about a minute, with text accurately derived from the video transcript. If you want a fast first taste of AI thumbnails, this one actually delivers it.
The pricing problem
You cannot find their prices without signing up
Thumbmagic publishes no pricing anywhere on its website. The pricing page 404s, the homepage has no dollar amounts, and the real numbers only appear in-app after you create an account: $17/mo billed yearly for 100 thumbnails (about $29 month to month), up to $59/mo billed yearly for unlimited (about $99 monthly). The annual floor is genuinely cheap. But you should not need an account to learn a price. LaunchLens pricing is public: $9, $15, $25, with the credit math written next to it.
Control
A template with your avatar is not your thumbnail
Thumbmagic's flow is template-first: pick a layout, it fills in copy and an avatar face. Fast, but locked. There is no expression control, no reshoot of an existing thumbnail, no iterative direction. LaunchLens treats the thumbnail like a scene you direct: your real face, your niche's visual language, surgical edits on the version you already like. And when the thumbnail is done, the same studio cuts the video, clips the Shorts and writes the metadata.
Questions, answered straight.
Is Thumbmagic free?+
Thumbmagic has a real free tier: 3 watermarked thumbnails with no card required, verified in our June 2026 test. Paid plans remove the watermark and raise limits, starting at $17/mo billed yearly (about $29 month to month). LaunchLens gives 25 free credits on signup, also with no card.
How much does Thumbmagic cost?+
As of our June 2026 test the in-app pricing was $17/mo billed yearly for 100 thumbnails, $35/mo for 500, and $59/mo for unlimited (roughly $29, $59 and $99 month to month). The site itself publishes no pricing; it appears only after signup.
Is Thumbmagic or LaunchLens better for gaming channels?+
Thumbmagic is faster for a one-shot template thumbnail from a URL. LaunchLens is built for gaming creators who iterate: your real face in the scene, expression control, reshooting existing thumbnails, plus video cutting, Shorts clipping and metadata in the same studio.
Who makes Thumbmagic?+
Thumbmagic comes from the team behind Submagic, the captions tool. That pedigree shows in its speed and transcript handling.
